< Back The Yellow Room James McNeill Whistler, Watercolor and gouache on paperboard, 1884 An ordinary, peaceful Sunday afternoon. I walked off the route 137 bus once again. It was another weekly routine to visit my grandparents in their little wooden villa away from the city. The house was surrounded by a golden rice field with some refreshing tints of green foliage scattered across the land. Joyful magpie chirps dispelled the silence of the countryside, and the gentle late-summer breeze stirred the tranquil field to life. I gently pushed the courtyard door covered with those naughty morning glory vines, and took a step in. The delicate, comforting aroma of antique furniture and traditional incense aroused a stream of warmth in my body. I closed my eyes, letting the memories fill up my mind. “Here, take these my boy.” Sitting in his rattan armchair in the yard, my grandpa handed me a pile of yellowed postcards. A soft shaft of sunlight painted his benevolent countenance in a subdued orange. The lively clanking of cooking-pots and the bubbling sound of carrot soup came from the kitchen inside, where my grandma was preparing my favorite dishes for dinner. I carefully held the postcards and started to go through them one by one. Most of the paintings and photographs on there blurred away from my memory over the years, but there was one, the one that remained clear and impacted my life – The Yellow Room. On the wrinkled postcard was a corner of a room. A yellow fireplace steadily stood on the left, with a thin, yellow chair facing towards it; a golden-framed mirror sat on the fireplace, leaning on the yellow wall behind; in front of the mirror was a row of vases and pottery, each with its own style. These pieces of yellow set a bright and harmonious tone for the room – tender, vivid, welcoming, and with the purest happiness. Stories unfolded here - families gathered, people laughed, children ran around, and time flowed. Just like the sunset yard where my grandpa gave me this postcard, it was a room too ideal, too happy to be real. …… In fact, my grandpa was defeated by pancreatic cancer three days before my visit. I had to face the truth, the brutal truth that life, despite its miraculous power of generating happiness, can vanish into the void on an innocent day. I opened my eyes and let the memories sink in. The room around me - dark, pale, inanimate with only flickering candlelight trying to light up a corner, dragged me towards the ground, as if my grandpa was calling me from underneath. I gently walked my way to the terrace. From there the verdant hills in the distance looked particularly soothing. I noticed the rattan chair was moved inside. “Grandma?” She was there, sitting in the chair, gazing into the vast yellow field. The other part of the postcard came to my mind. To the right of the fireplace in the yellow room was a lady. A lady in purple, an opposition of harmony. She collapsed into the chair, holding her head with both hands, as if she was trying to resolve a problem that could never be fixed. Her eyes were blurred; she had nowhere to look. The yellow wall behind her appeared darker, with hints of violet and indigo smeared onto it. In a room lit up with the warm happiness, she, with her cold outfit, seemed insulated from the kindness of the world. She was apart from us. She was alone. Is happiness the norm? One would wonder. Or is it sadness? Does the loss of her love torment the violet lady, or is she relieved from the curse of life, a curse that haunted her for decades? What granted life the arrogant power of devastating another life? I was angry, furious, even crazy when these ideas ate up my mind. Where? Where is the answer? In desperation, I opened the dusted envelope, took out the postcards for the first time in three years. There I resorted to my last hope – the yellow room. This time, I noticed something that had been hiding from me all these years. Vases. Mirror. Pottery. Glass frame. Thin chairs. The lady. Vases. Mirror. Pottery. Glass frame. Thin chairs. The lady. … A hidden but crucial connection between all of these that made up the painting revealed itself – fragility! The artwork screamed the word fragility in every object it captured. The seemingly secure and happy room was comprised of nothing but disguised fragility. I wondered all these times why this particular piece of art touched me deep inside, and now I probably have an answer. What makes life precious? Not the emotions, the fame, or the ability to perceive, but the fragility that grants it a one-way pass through the world of the living. I calmed myself in front of my grandma. She looked at me in a deep and gentle gaze. “You’re back, my dear child.” She gave me a big hug and smiled in the sun.

Citation A Collaborative Multimodal XR Physical Design Environment Associated With NYU Future Reality Lab Presented at SIGGRAPH Asia 2024 Traditional design processes for physical prototypes can be time-consuming and costly due to iterations of prototyping, testing, and refinement. Extended Reality (XR) technology with video passthrough has its unique benefits in alleviating the issues by providing instant visual feedback. We develop an XR system that provides annotations and enables interactive visual modifications by superimposing and aligning visual counterparts to physical objects. With multimodal inputs, the system could help designers quickly experiment with and visualize a wide range of design options, keep track of design evolutions, and explore innovative solutions without the constraints of physical prototyping. As a result, it could significantly speed up the iteration process with fewer physical modifications in each design iteration. Keru Wang, Pincun Liu, Yushen Hu, Xiaoan Liu, Zhu Wang, and Ken Perlin. Citation A Survey on Audio-influenced Pseudo-Haptics: Methods, Applications, and Opportunities Associated With NYU Future Reality Lab and Music and Audio Research Laboratory Submitted to CHI 2025 Haptic feedback plays an important role in interaction, but traditional haptic devices are often difficult to access due to their complexity and high cost. A cost-effective alternative is to leverage auditory cues to generate pseudo-haptic sensations using the brain’s multisensory processing abilities. These auditory cues can enhance or modify actual haptic feedback, add detail to low-resolution haptic devices, or create convincing haptic illusions without physical contact. Despite their potential, audio-influenced pseudo-haptics remain underexplored. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of existing research on audio-influenced pseudo-haptics, summarizing the mapping between different auditory cues and the pseudo-haptics that they elicit. We review and categorize system implementations, study methods and applications, identify key challenges, and discuss future opportunities. We aim to provide a road map in audio-influenced pseudo-haptics research and inspire further exploration in this field, fostering innovation and guiding the development of more immersive, functional, and accessible systems. 实习经历 穿越现实世界的旅行。 Celestial Blossom: A Collaborative, Meditative VR Journey of Fractal Art and Music Associated With NYU Future Reality Lab NYU MARL Submitted to SIGGRAPH 2025 Celestial Blossom is a collaborative, meditative VR experience where participants co-create generative fractal art through hand-drawn sketches, transforming movements into evolving audiovisual symphonies. Set in a celestial void, strokes morph into glowing fractal particles, from microscopic grains to cosmic stars, each resonating with a musical note and evolving into immersive sound textures. Multiplayer interaction allows users to weave their creations into a shared immersive composition. At the end, participants receive a printed rendering of their artwork, which can be scanned to revisit the fractals and melodies they created in VR. Motivation Virtual Reality (VR) has been explored as a tool for mindfulness , with studies showing that VR-based meditation can reduce stress and enhance emotional well-being. However, most VR meditation experiences are passive, relying on guided breathing or static environments. While effective, meditation is fundamentally about self-awareness and presence, which can be deepened through active engagement rather than passive observation. One way to cultivate active presence is through creative expression . Activities like coloring books promote relaxation and introspection, making artistic creation a powerful meditative tool. VR expands this concept, enabling immersive artistic experiences beyond traditional media. Applications like Tilt Brush and Quill make digital art intuitive and accessible, allowing users to create freely in three-dimensional space while enhancing meditative focus. Building on these ideas, we introduce Celestial Blossom, a VR experience that merges artistic creation with meditation. Using body gestures, participants generate evolving fractal patterns accompanied by harmonious sound, transforming their movements into an immersive, meditative journey. By actively shaping their environment through creative expression, users cultivate self-awareness, presence, and tranquility, offering a deeply personal and interactive path to mindfulness. The fractal design is inspired by the idea that small actions can lead to infinite complexity. As William Blake wrote, "To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower," a single sketch in Celestial Blossom expands into a self-replicating pattern, illustrating how simple gestures can generate vast, intricate forms. These fractals mirror the meditative process itself, where focused, deliberate actions unfold into something greater. Fractals System Features Celestial Blossom runs on a custom WebXR platform with a built-in renderer and multiplayer capabilities. The system uses Meta Quest 3 headsets with hand-tracking for intuitive interaction. Gesture-Based Sketching Participants can draw freely in VR using hand pinching gestures. The system recognizes these sketches by calculating the mean squared error between the drawn paths and predefined shape templates such as moons and stars. Once a match is determined within a defined threshold, the system morphs the sketches into particles in the recognized shape. Fractal Particles The particles will be replicated at various scales to form a fractal pattern. The movement and color of the fractals are influenced by the user’s drawing behavior, including speed, direction, and stroke continuity. This dynamic particle system ensures that each drawing evolves organically, creating a visually intricate and responsive environment that reflects the user’s actions. Interactive Music Each drawn stroke evokes a corresponding musical gesture, shaping an evolving and immersive soundscape. The system maps various attributes of the user’s drawing, such as stroke length, curvature, and density, to music generation and sound synthesis parameters, including pitch, duration, grain size, density, envelope shape, and spatialization. Multiplayer Interaction Celestial Blossom is designed as a shared experience, allowing multiple participants to create and interact in the same virtual space. Users appear to each other as ethereal, glowing forms. Drawings and sounds are synchronized in real time, enabling participants to collaborate on evolving artworks. Revisiting The Experience At the end of the experience, each participant receives a printed card featuring a top-down rendering of what they created in VR. The image on the card serves as a scannable pattern that, when scanned by our designated app, directs users to an online portal where they can listen to the unique music piece created during their session. The Experience Our booth in SIGGRAPH 2025 is designed as a serene, Zen-like space. Participants enter a dimly lit area with cushions, soft lighting, ambient lamps, and natural elements, creating a peaceful atmosphere. A projector displays a real-time top-down view of the evolving fractal patterns for spectators. We guide 1 to 4 participants into the booth at the same time, where they sit on cushions. They will start with a built-in tutorial introducing the interaction before experiencing Celestial Blossom for about 3 minutes. After the session, each participant receives a printed card featuring their fractal artwork that they can scan to retrieve the music they created.
